Critical Mass Big Band celebrates its 25th Anniversary season in 2026 with a spectacular tribute concert at The Royal Room, honoring two legendary jazz figures: Gordon Goodwin and Maynard Ferguson. Both of these icons have made an indelible impact on American culture and the art of jazz.
Gordon Goodwin, a distinguished American pianist, saxophonist, composer, arranger, and conductor, is renowned for his work as a premier music score composer in Hollywood and as the conductor of The Big Phat Band. The concert will feature some of his most joyful and high-energy pieces, including “Hunting Wabbits,” “High Maintenance,” “Seven Steps to Heaven,” “Mueva Los Hueso,” and the tear-jerker “When I Fall in Love.”
Maynard Ferguson, always true to his belief that music is about change, emerged from big-band swing and explored a wide array of genres, including jazz, bebop, East Indian fusion, rock, funk, disco, and traditional jazz. The concert will showcase some of his iconic hits, such as “Birdland,” “Nice and Juicy,” and an adaptation of James Taylor’s “Country Road.”
For nearly 25 years, the Critical Mass Big Band has been a cornerstone of Seattle’s contemporary jazz scene, consistently delivering electrifying performances that leave audiences spellbound. Under the musical direction of Ian Basques-Jellison, this premier jazz ensemble features five saxophones (Paul Gillespie, Barbara Hubers-Drake, Al Lowe, Ian Basques-Jellison, Sara Voskuhl), four trombones (Jim Elder, Dave Buck, Doug Lora, Vinnie Christ), five trumpets (Marty Molloy, Jeff Leinbaugh, Mark Baker, Greg Klein, Victor Ross), piano (Seth Ahnert), guitar (Neal Adams), bass (Phil Demaree), and drums (Rob Parks). Their energetic big band jazz is sure to impress.
Don’t miss this unforgettable celebration of jazz and its timeless legends. We look forward to seeing you there!
